Home Depot Delivery Drivers Pay Out of Pocket for Damages - Stainless Refrigerator


I have had dozens of appliances delivered from Home Depot and they are usually very good. I've had damaged appliances and they either discount the appliance or replace it with one that is not damaged, no problem.

Today, I had a fridge delivered and the drivers, who were very nice, did EXTENSIVE damage to the back hall where they did the delivery. Two holes in the wall, damaged concrete, scraped paint and some moderate to severe damage to the 100 year old trim and molding.

Most of the damage was caused because they forgot to screw in the screws that hold on the door, so they gouged the wood when scraping it.

Here is the kicker, when I explained to the driver I could not sign and say there was no damage, he offered to re plaster and paint it himself. He asked if I just had some matching paint for the 3 color paint job, and then explained that if I reported this damage to the home depot that he will actually have to pay for it out of his pocket.

He gave me his home phone number and begged me to call him to come and do the repairs so he didn't have to pay.

I called the delivery company Home Depot sent called "SPIRIT" and they confirmed that indeed, if I put in a claim, they would force the driver to pay for this out of pocket. I spoke with a manager named "Alex" - a woman, who was too scared to give her last name.

She said the driver's don't get paychecks, they get checks for the delivery and are issued a 1099 as independent contractors and they are responsible as individuals for everything.

Bottom line, there is no way I am putting in a claim against the poor driver and his helper. It looks like the Home Depot is pretending to be a national appliance supplier with 'white glove delivery' but really just using craigslist style people to do the delivery where there is no accountability at all.

Shame to all the executives at the Home Depot for treating workers this way. You would expect this in a third world country, but not in the USA!
