Poor Installation & Customer Relations - Windows Replacement

Made a contract with Home Depot to replace 5 windows and an 8 ft. sliding door. After I signed the contract, I found that, over the years, moisture from the old single pane aluminum windows had damaged the sheetrock around all of the windows. I decided to replace or repair the damage before the new windows were installed. To do this, I had to remove the old windows and then temporarily put them back in until the new windows arrived. Since the old windows were nailed directly to the studs, it was necessary to remove the brick mold from around the windows and then cut the sheeting to gain access to the nail fins of the old windows. I removed the windows and made the repairs to the sills and casing and then primed the repairs.

It took me around an hour to an hour and a half to remove each of the old windows to make the repairs. After the repairs were complete, I temporarily set the old windows back in place with two screws on each side.

When Home Depot installers arrived, all that they had to do was remove the four screws and set the new windows in place. This took them about 15 minutes a window. I had contracted to replace the exterior trim myself, so they didn%u2019t even have to do that.

It did take them a little over an hour and a half to replace the 8 ft slider. In just over 3 hours they were done and gone.

Since I had saved the installers about half of their labor time for the job, I contacted Home Depot to see if I could get and adjustment to the original contract price. I was told NO! They said I had taken it upon myself to do the work and no adjustment would be made.

We are talking about a $ 5,700 contract. The windows and door probably cost around $ 1,500 leaving around $ 4,000 for the installation labor. There were 2 installers busy for, lets give them 4 hours. You do the math. It burns me every time I think about it.

I did sign the contract and did all the work of my own volition, but you%u2019d think customer service would come in a little bit.

The workmanship was below average for this day and age. Speed has taken precedence over craftsmanship. I had to stop the installer when he started to caulk the inside perimeter of the window. I%u2019m not the greatest caulker, but this guy over-caulked and just smeared it with his finger, so they didn%u2019t even have to do that chore.
